Some of my earliest and most treasured memories are of curling up in the beanbag in my bedroom, lost in the pages of a book. I was an early reader, and I loved books immediately—not just for the stories themselves, but for what they offered: a way to experience life, explore new worlds, and discover perspectives far beyond the walls of my room.
As I grew older, my grandmother would ask me to read to her. Even when my interests expanded and my world grew busier, those moments remained special. I didn’t fully understand it then, but those reading sessions were about more than words on a page. They were about connection, presence, and the simple joy of sharing a story.
Years later, I began to see a troubling gap: childhood literacy rates are declining. Many children struggle not because they can’t read, but because they lack the practice and confidence that comes from reading regularly in a supportive, encouraging environment. At the same time, our elders—some of the wisest, most patient members of our communities—often face isolation and loneliness, longing for connection and purpose.
That’s when the idea for Greyt Stories Inc. was born.
Children and elders are both at-risk groups, but for different reasons. Children need practice and encouragement to build literacy skills and confidence. Elders need connection, engagement, and the knowledge that they still have something valuable to offer.
By bringing these two generations together through weekly phone-based reading sessions, we address both needs at once. Children get a caring, patient listener who celebrates their progress. Elders get a meaningful role, a weekly connection, and the joy of knowing they’re making a real difference in a child’s life.
Greyt Stories Inc. is more than a nonprofit—it’s a reflection of everything I learned in that chair in my bedroom and in those cherished moments with my grandmother. It’s about the power of stories to connect us, the importance of practice in building confidence, and the profound impact of intergenerational relationships.
Every week, our “Greyt Callers” (children) connect with “Greyt Listeners” (elders) for a simple 10-minute phone call. Together, they read, they laugh, they grow. And in doing so, they remind us all that the greatest stories aren’t just found in books—they’re created when we show up for one another.
